Hiking the Presque Isle River Loop in the Porkies

The Wednesday after Labor Day with clouds cleared and a chilly north wind blowing, we closed the coffee bar down at 9:30, put up our off-duty sign, and drove around to the far west side of the Park to the hike the three mile Presque Isle River loop trail running along the both sides of the river. This 42 mile, spring fed river empties into Lake Superior with the last miles offering numerous rapids and waterfalls. We both agreed this is one of the prettiest river hikes we've ever made. 

The warm sun, clear skies and chilly breeze made for perfect hiking weather.

The east side of the trail had offered better views of the river than the west side with much of the west side on a board walk built over the river bank. Still, it was all gorgeous and enjoyable! We picnicked at a table in the parking area before driving south to the town of Ironwood to visit Walmart for some fresh groceries and camp host supplies. Marshmallows go fast when hot chocolate is offered.
After the 50 minute drive back, we found the high winds that felt like breezes in the woods had blown our chairs and signs down. We've been told winds can be fierce in September.
